The Nuclear Lyricist Foundation is a South African non-profit organisation and approved Public Benefit Organisation built around the simple belief that people should not be defined by their circumstances.

At the centre of the Foundation is Stephen Gawking – The Nuclear Lyricist, the creative identity of South African songwriter, lyricist, conceptual artist, storyteller and creative director Ijay Swanepoel.

Ijay lives with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2, a genetic neuromuscular condition that causes progressive muscle weakness due to the loss of motor neurons responsible for controlling the muscles. The condition began in infancy and significantly affects his movement, strength, and breathing. However, it does not affect his intelligence, creativity, or passion for storytelling and the arts. Ijay has chosen not to make disability the limit of his story, but part of the story from which something greater can be created.

His philosophy is “My life is a portrait, and I hold the paintbrush" and this idea sits at the heart of everything the Foundation seeks to do.

FROM PERSONAL STORY TO PUBLIC PURPOSE

Stephen Gawking began as a creative project. It is now becoming something bigger. Ijay develops songs, lyrics, concepts and stories and brings together artists and creative professionals to turn those ideas into finished work. Over the years, this has led to collaborations with South African artists and creatives including Mark Haze, Eva Morgan, Clint Brink, Nathan Blur, HemelBesem, Aewon Wolf, Eduan, Kat, Kulax, Loufi, Gazelle and Vicus Visser, among others.

But collaboration is not the end goal. The work is about what the creativity can make possible.

• A song can communicate hope and change perspective.

• A song can creative opportunity and empower someone in need with confidence, income, experience or a platform.

The Foundation exists to take that potential and create a structured, sustainable platform for public benefit.

MUSIC WITH A MESSAGE

The Stephen Gawking catalogue demonstrates the philosophy behind the work. The music draws on real experiences and explores themes including faith, grief, resilience, mental health, ambition, disability, perseverance, purpose and human connection.

• 'Cheslin Kolbe In An Office Cubicle' uses the story of a South African sporting hero to explore the refusal to abandon a dream.

• 'Andria the Angelic' transforms the loss of Ijay's younger sister, who lived with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, into a story of love, remembrance and hope.

• 'Demons and Disorders' addresses mental-health struggles and the importance of empathy and honest conversation.

• 'Remember The Dream' speaks to perseverance, unity and continuing to pursue one's aspirations.

• 'The Way' explores faith, direction and purpose in the aftermath of adversity.

• 'Bubblegum Milkshake' uses an accessible, upbeat musical approach to explore the difference between what people present to the world and what may be happening beneath the surface.

•  'Manna' explores creativity, authenticity and human connection in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Together, these projects demonstrate the Foundation's central proposition that music can entertain while carrying a message that encourages people to think, feel, question, hope and act.

WHAT THE FOUNDATION DOES

The Foundation brings together music, storytelling, faith, creative collaboration and outreach to create work that has a purpose beyond entertainment. Its activities can include:

Creative Production

• Developing and releasing professionally produced music, music videos, storytelling content and related creative campaigns.

Positive Public Messaging

• Using creative work to communicate messages of faith, hope, resilience, dignity, unity, compassion, inclusion and purpose.

Disability Empowerment

• Promoting positive and dignified representation of disability and challenging assumptions about what people with disabilities can contribute.

Opportunities for Creatives

• Creating paid project opportunities, professional credits, collaboration and portfolio-building opportunities for musicians and other creative professionals, including suitably skilled creatives with disabilities where practical.

Outreach and Partnerships

• Working with churches, schools, charities, disability organisations, companies, community groups and other aligned partners through music projects, workshops, speaking engagements, campaigns and collaborative initiatives.

The emphasis is not pity. It is ability, participation, dignity and opportunity.

WHY MUSIC?

•  A song can reach a city, a country, or a generation.

• A story can be shared by someone who has never heard of the organisation behind it.

• A lyric can stay with someone long after the music stops.

The Foundation sees music not merely as a finished product, but as a delivery mechanism for ideas, stories and public-benefit messages. Professional production matters because reach matters. The better the music, visual storytelling and campaign, the further the message can travel.

WHO BENEFITS?

The Foundation's purpose extends beyond the artist at its centre.

• People with disabilities can benefit through representation, participation, creative expression and opportunity.

• Musicians and creative professionals can benefit through paid work, collaboration, credits and professional development.

• Schools, churches, companies and community groups can access conversations around faith, resilience, creativity, purpose and inclusion.

The wider public can encounter professionally produced music and storytelling carrying messages of hope, dignity, unity and human potential.

• This is where the personal story becomes public purpose.

• Personal experience becomes creative expression.

• Creative expression becomes opportunity.
• Opportunity becomes participation.
• Participation becomes impact.
